WVSSAC W. Va. State Meet: Burcham (14:58) and Drazba (17:17) rock course records!

HIGHLIGHTS

BOYS AAA: US#10 Cabell Midland sr Jacob Burcham blasted his 2-year-old CR with a eye-opening 14:58.04, winning his third title by more than 40 seconds. George Washington jr Matthew Braffordwas second in 15:42.10 and Cabell Midland sr Avery Campbell third in 15:57.28. Cabell Midlandscored 37 to top University’s 75, with Jefferson edging Morgantown for third, 111-121.

GIRLS AAA: University jr Amelia Paladino rolled to a 36-second win in 17:47.32, followed by Morgantown sr Brynn Harshbarger 18:23.44 and University soph Abbey Harrison 18:45.52. Paladino was 3rd in 2011. Morgantown dominated with five scoring in the top nine (2-5 girls had 10-second spread) and scoring 30 to 90 from University and 116 from Hurricane. They smashed their own old team average record (19:36 from 2010) with 19:02.

BOYS AA-A: Fairmont Senior sr Nick Trefz triumphed with 15:52.2, topping Doddridge County srCaleb Moore’s 16:04.4 and Ritchie County jr Johnny Hogue’s 16:11.3. Trefz’s win paced Fairmont to the win with 92 over Frankfort 111 and Doddridge County 119. Trefz was 5th and his team 6th in AAA last year, but the school moved down a class.

GIRLS AA-A: US#17 St. Mary’s sr Maggie Drazba defended her title by a huge margin, running a course record 17:17.89 to triumph by more than two minutes over Frankfort sr Katie Jan(19:23.52). Drazba beat Samantha Nightingale’s old CR of 17:32. She also won as a frosh, giving her three career titles. Philip Barbour sr Brianna Waybright was third with 19:34.43, with junior teammates Allison Villers and Marissa Long close behind in the top six as they won their 3rd straight with 75 points. Frankfort was second with 81 and Scott third with 114.
